THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF INSULATING MATERIAL USING ANSYS

    Abstract

The study involved in this project work is to determine the effective thermal conductivity of insulating material that can be used for various parts in thermal power plant, insulation material being polyurethane foam having thermal conductivity less than rock wool which is being used in the plant. The analysis of the insulation with polyurethane foam material is done in ANSYS. The commercial finite element analysis software ANSYS classic is used for validation and ANSYS workbench is used for the further analysis .Polyurethane foam material with air voids was modeled in ANSYS and the effective thermal conductivity is calculated. The result of the present research work shows that with increase in the volume fraction of air voids, effective thermal conductivity of the insulation material decreases .Thus it can be used to replace rock wool insulation material used in thermal power plant which has thermal conductivity greater than the polyurethane foam material .Also the weight of insulation material decreases as the volume fraction of voids increases , and it can be used in power plant equipment which light above the ground.
